County of Citrus recently issued the following announcement.
The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum is proud to announce their new operating hours. Starting in March, the museum (located at 1 Courthouse Square, Inverness, FL 34450) will
be open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm, closed Sunday and Monday. Stop by on Saturday, March 5, 2022, for a grand kickoff of their new
schedule. From 10:00am until 4:00pm, the museum will host its first “Kids’ Corner and Crafternoons.” This event will include arts and crafts, a storyteller, live music, and a free
movie at the Valerie Theater, with vendors and communityorganizations represented.
Stay tuned for more exciting family programming on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Attendees can explore the permanent exhibits on local prehistory and pioneer
history, as well as the rotating gallery, currently displaying the “Citrus County: Our Ways Our Waters” exhibit. Additionally, the gift shop and historic courtroom will be open for
visitors. The courtroom hostedElvis during the filming of his famous film, “Follow That Dream,” and photos and footage from the movie set helped guide the restoration process in
the 1990s. After exploring the museum, visitors can enjoy the Inverness Farmer’s Market at the Historic Depot District, also held on the first and
third Saturdays.
The museum is a historical gem at the heart of Downtown Inverness. The proud structure has stood for over 100 years and, although the business of the court is no longer
transacted here, it is still an important pillar of the community. It is a place of learning, a community space, and an entertainment venue. The fully restored second-floor courtroom
recalls the majesty of turn-of-the-century architecture and design and provides an intimate and unforgettable setting for fun company, magnificent music, and learning about our
local history.
The Inverness Cultural Heritage Council, d.b.a. Citrus County Historical Society, Inc. (a non-profit organization) is a continuous supporter of these events and exhibits, relying on
community donations to fund their efforts.
