Santa Fe College issued the following announcement on Feb. 22.
In honor of Black History Month, Santa Fe College’s Association of Black Faculty and Staff (ABFS) will offer information important to SF and the community at large.
This week, the topic is – A. Quinn Jones
In 1923, A. Quinn Jones became the first black principal of Lincoln High School. Under his leadership, he turned the school into the first accredited all-black school in Gainesville
and second in the state of Florida. In 2017, Jones’ old home became the A. Quinn Jones Museum and Cultural Center, a historic landmark available to the public. “The Museum
features a permanent exhibit on “Prof” Jones, the people and places of the Fifth Avenue/Pleasant Street neighborhood, and houses a collection of oral histories centering on the
African-American experience in Gainesville. The rest of the space will house rotating exhibits.” Take the time to visit the A. Quinn Jones Museum and Cultural Center located at
1013 NW 7th Avenue in Gainesville.
