Santa Fe College is participating in the STEM for All Video Showcase, which runs now through next Tuesday, May 18. The showcase is designed to increase access and interest in STEM fields, especially among underrepresented communities. This year, the college has three entries.
Growth Mindset Interventions for Faculty and Students is the submission from the Florida-Caribbean Louis Stokes Regional Center for Excellence – a collaboration between SF and the University of the Virgin Islands to broaden participation in STEM by developing, testing and disseminating mindset intervention practices that enhance growth mindsets when encountering academic challenges.
SF’s GRRATE submitted Video Support in the Classroom – Guitars, Robots and Rockets. GRRATE, which was implemented at SF in 2019, introduces students who are often underrepresented in STEM to the possibility of high-paying, rewarding careers in STEM. GRRATE offers ISC1006 Wide World of Science, a project-based course with three experiential learning project options: guitar building, robotics and rocketry.
The third entry is Quantitative Biology at Community Colleges and includes representation from Santa Fe College. It’s a network of faculty in mathematics and biology from a number of community colleges across the country working to create materials that both disciplines can use in their classrooms. All of the materials that we create (and adapt) are published as OER so that faculty and students worldwide can access them to foster an interdisciplinary approach to learning.
