DESCRIPTION
Explore the island capital of the ancient Calusa with a historian and a biologist. This special tour of Mound Key Archaeological State Park will highlight recent archaeological discoveries as well as detail the ecology of this human-made island.The tour will begin on the southeastern landing of the island. Buoys will be placed at both the southeastern and northwestern landings the morning of the tour to better mark the entrances for paddlers.Participants must transport themselves to the island by kayak or canoe as well as traverse uneven terrain across the island. Bring plenty of water.Kayaks can be rented from the Lovers Key Bait Shop, located on the eastern side of Estero Boulevard, starting at 6:30 a.m. The phone number of the bait shop is 239-463-5990.Launching from Lovers Key it is about 2 miles to Mound Key.
