The Citrus County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has proclaimed March 2023 to be the 21st Annual "March for Meals" Month. Each year, Meals on Wheels celebrates the historic day in 1972 when a national nutrition program for seniors was added to the Older Americans Act. This legislation supported the rapid growth of the Meals on Wheels network, which now collectively serves 2.8 million seniors each year – including over 300 right here in Citrus County.
Members of the Friends of the Community Centers joined representatives from Citrus County's Support Services Division at Tuesday’s BOCC meeting to accept the proclamation. In return, the Friends presented the BOCC with a check for $5,470. These proceeds from the Circle of Friends Gift Shop (located at Lecanto's Central Citrus Community Center) to Citrus County's local Meals on Wheels program.
Since 2010, the Friends of the Community Centers have contributed more than $50,000 in gift shop proceeds to help feed area seniors. Citrus County Meals on Wheels delivered 60,505 meals last year, and volunteers gave over 1,550 hours of volunteer service during the same period.
“I applaud the efforts of the Circle of Friends Gift Shop” said County Administrator Steve Howard. “Their generosity is making a positive difference for our community.”
