University of Florida Athletics recently issued the following announcement.
The Florida Gators women's tennis team has three in the quarterfinals of singles play and a pair in the doubles semifinals as they totaled seven wins on day one of the Bedford Cup hosted by the University of South Florida.
Alicia Dudeney, Emma Shelton and Bente Spee all advanced to the singles quarterfinals after winning four matches among the three of them. Both Shelton and Dudeney had first-round byes, while Spee defeated the No. 3 seed en route to a quarterfinals appearance.
No. 84 Shelton had herself a day in her Gators debut as she came in as a 1-seed in the tournament and easily won her singles match against FGCU's Ida Ferding, 6-2, 6-1. She is set to compete against Kamila Umarova of FIU tomorrow.
Dudeney entered the tournament as a 2-seed and secured herself a place in the quarterfinals after defeating South Florida's Alexandria Mjos, 6-2, 6-1. Dudeney will take on Marie Mattel of UCF tomorrow.
Spee collected two solid wins of her own as she downed Sean Lodski of North Florida, 6-2, 6-1, and Andreea Velcea of FIU, 7-5, 6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals. She is scheduled to face UCF's Jaleesa Leslie on Saturday.
Sydney Berlin also tallied a singles win today after beating FGCU's Emma Bardet, 7-6 (6), 6-3. Both Berlin and teammate Emily De Oliveira will square off in tomorrow's singles match.
Shelton and Spee paired together and made their way to the doubles semifinals after collecting a win over FAU's Katerina Filip and Greta Schieroni, 6-3. The duo had a first-round bye as the 1-seed, and will face UCF's Nandini Sharmaa and Marie Mattel tomorrow.
No. 4-seeded doubles pair, Dudeney and De Oliveira, notched a win of their own in the first round after dominating Annabelle Davis and Summer Yardley of North Florida, 6-1.
The Gators continue play at the Bedford Cup tournament on Saturday, October 2.
